driver training
ExxonMobil has quite a number of training programs to build a safety mindset.
For example:
Ongoing programs:
1. Tailored promotion campaigns, such as “Buckle Up”, which encourage drivers to buckle up.
2. Off-the-job-safety activities, such as fire-fighting courses for drivers’ families or a drawing contest for drivers’ children — which emphasise that a safety mindset can only grow if it is part of your work and private life. It is not something that you only switch on when going to work.
Behaviour based systems:
1. Defensive Driving: The truck drivers of ExxonMobil follow a defensive driving course every 24 months. We also provide regular defensive driving training to more than 2000 employees in Europe who are frequently driving cars on business. In a number of countries, this is even extended to other employees and their family members.
2. In driver fatigue training we teach drivers to recognise and act upon signs of fatigue. Studies have shown that driver fatigue is a major contributing factor to vehicle incidents, so it is extremely important that drivers understand fatigue, its effects, how to identify it and ways to prevent its occurrence. We also help them to adjust their lifestyle — such as eating and sleeping habits — because fatigue is often caused by what drivers do when they are not working.
Other examples of Driver Training include cell phone use guidelines and blind spot mirror training.
